Every year, diarrhea and acute respiratory infections cause the death of more than 3.5 million children under five. However, these figures could be cut dramatically if handwashing with soap was widely practiced.

Therefore, Fit for School Inc. (FFS) participated in the “University of Handwashing” hosted by the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap (PPPHW) in Nairobi, Kenya, 12–14 July (http://www.globalhandwashing.org).  During the workshop, FFS demonstrated how handwashing with soap is effectively integrated in the Essential Health Care Program (EHCP) in Philippine public elementary schools.  EHCP is implemented by the  Department of Education (DepED) and funded by Local Government Units.

Former_DepED_Sec._Lapus_honored

On March 24, 2010, Philippine NGO Fit for School presented former Department of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus with the Global South-South Development award that was given to the Department of Education and Fit for School by the United Nations Development Programme, the World Health Organization, and the World Bank in recognition of their innovative Essential Health Care Program (EHCP). Fit for School turned over the award to Sec. Lapus in appreciation of his stalwart championship of EHCP.

EHCP is DepED’s flagship school health program, which was developed in cooperation with Fit for School. The program institutionalizes three preventive health measures in public elementary schools nationwide: daily handwashing with soap, daily fluoride toothbrushing, and bi-annual deworming. At present, one million children are part of EHCP and this number is expected to increase as the program is scaled-up.

Washington, 16 Dec 2009 –  Today, the Philippine Fit for School Programme received a major international recognition for its efforts to tackle the high burden of preventable  diseases in children. On the occasion of the United Nations international day for South-South Cooperation, organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO), Fit for School was awarded as one of three projects worldwide for its innovative approach to improve child health using the existing structure of the school system

Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, 23 November 2009 – The  Fit For School program in the Philippines was selected to present during the Global South-South Expo 2009, organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organization, the World Bank and other international organizations. As part of only three projects selected worldwide, Fit for School has been chosen due to its innovative concept, combining high impact and evidence-based interventions in a simple and cost effective package to improve health and development of primary school children. Simple interventions like daily handwashing with soap,  fluoride toothbrushing and bi-annual deworming as part of school activities are the main component of the program.

On 26 and 27 November 2009, delegates from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Vietnam convened in Pasig City, Philippines, for the Meeting on School Health Programmes in Asia, which was hosted by Philippine NGO ‘Fit for School Inc.’ with the financial support of German NGO InWEnt – Capacity Building International.

The meeting provided the delegates, comprised of representatives of their countries’ Ministries of Health and Ministries of Education, with an opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss common issues and concerns. The award-winning Fit for School programme in the Philippines was showcased as a model for programme design and implementation, and effective inter-sectoral collaboration. Delegates visited a public elementary school where they witnessed first hand how the programme was implemented. The Fit for School programme has been recently selected as one of three winners in the Global Health Forum of the Global South-South Development Expo 2009.
